What is the difference between ambient, trance, techno, electronica, industrial music?

I realize that ambient would be anything that would be background, but is the rest affected by mood conveyed, instruments used, artist’s motivation, or what?

Thanks.

  1. Well there is a lot of crossover between them so the labeling can get pretty blurry, but in a nutshell…

    Techno is primarily dance music and is generally very repetitive (a little too repetitive I think).
    Industrial is usually danceable, but with hard edged gothy undertones and not so repetitive like techno.
    Trance and ambient is downtempo electronica like something to chill with. A slower beat or maybe a droning quality to it.
    And electronica pretty much encompasses all the above where it’s more instrumental and involving keyboards and other electronically produced sounds.

    Most of this kind of music is derived from club scenes like raves or goth/industrial clubs.

  2. Industrial music is when your boss screams at you …..

    GET BACK TO WORK OR YOU’RE FIRED !!!!”

    ….all day long!

  3. First answerer o.O

    Ambient = Nature, background

    Trance = Hypnotic, relaxing (“Mushroom” by Junkie XL)

    Techno = Fast-paced, generally used for dancing

    Electronica = Experimental electronica, dance, and trance done with a synthesizer. (“From Rusholme With Love” by Mint Royale)

    Industrial = Very heavy combination of any of the above with alot of bass. Chevelle, Cubanate, Nine Inch Nails, and Taproot can count as industrial bands.
