i need to know as soon as possible PLZ
to make the painting more mysterious
to protect the person shown in the portrait
their real name was too hard to spell
as a game to let the viewer guess

  2. Since it was considered “indecent” at the time and the lady was a well-bred woman, he changed the name to protect her identity.
