Introduction to Jyotish, Part 1: What is Vedic Astrology? What is this thing that were studying anyway? Is it fortune-telling? Is it some mystical thing where we can tell if somebody likes us, or if we can understand what theyre going to do tomorrow? Not really, not really. Really, what astrology is, is the study of time. Sometimes you hear people say The stars cause this, or The stars did that, or The stars made me do something. This is very childish, because actually the soul is the senior cause of all causes as far as what we do in this material life, or what we do with this body. The decisions that we make everyday in our lives determine how we are acting, and we have the free will to either accept or reject the influences of the stars and planets. We are not machines, in other words. So if that is the case, then what is astrology really? Well as I said, it is the study of time. The principle is that things that go on in the stars and planets, or in the worlds of the demigods, are not exactly the cause of what happens here on earth, but they mirror the same cycles of time. If any of you watched our video on fractal time, then you know that the actual shape of time is a fractal. In other words, theres a pattern that repeats at bigger and smaller scales. And this pattern can be known, it can be understood, and according to Vedic astrology it repeats every so many millions of years, the same pattern.

  1. Thanks, we have a course on Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra, the original source of Vedic astrology. You can download the complete text and go through the lessons. Then if you analyze your own chart you will learn a great deal.

  2. Thank you for this very enlightened (enlightening) introduction. I have been looking into Jyotish it seems to be quite accurate. I have been looking for a practitioner but am feeling that it would be worthwhile to study it myself. Or use it to study my self. Thanks for posting.

  3. thank you baba, very enriching and informative video, i was looking for something of this kind for a long time!!!!! I was always fascinated by astrology and the fact that even before the invention of modern instruments and equipments our forefathers were able to understand astronomy and and find relation between the workings of universe and the mortals living in it.

  4. The Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Maharaja (Ruler) Jai Singh II at his then new capital of Jaipur between 1727 and 1734. It is modeled after the one that he had built for him at the then Mughal capital of Delhi. He had constructed a total of five such facilities at different locations, including the ones at Delhi and Jaipur. The Jaipur observatory is the largest of these.

  5. Thanks for your nice questions. Yes I do accept students and disciples, please see our main site for details. This whole series is based on Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra, plus we have a whole course on the Jyotish section of our site.

  6. Thank you for your response. Please dont misunderstand me, I m in love with u in the way a seeker loves his master for guidance and compassion he recieves. I hope u r open for a seeker master relationship. I m not into any mundane relationship’s either.
I m very special and I feel blessed as I m in touch with very special people like you.
    One Questions:
    1) Have u also similar videos uploaded on Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra ?
    2) First I will complete your series here.

  7. Facility for meditation is more likely to be influenced by current transits. Vedic astrology is a huge subject, we recommend to begin with Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra since that is the original work on the subject. Also you must have good brahminical qualifications to learn and practice the science of Jyotish as it is. I have guru in 9th and Maṅgal exalted. Actually I am a renunciant and not interested in mundane relationships.

  8. Hi Dave, Thankyou very much. I like ur teaching style and u r very lovely. Love u. I have started to learn vedic astrology since 1 week, and my intention is to find the best and worst time for me to do meditation. Since I find, some days my sadhana (meditation) is awesome and some day it is not so easy. I need to find the relation or pattern in my performace in meditation and astrological placements. U r a good teacher and I wonder if u have Guru in your fist house ?

  9. That is the relative view, but the point of view of Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra is the Absolute, eternal platform of spiritual existence. Who cares what others think? We accept the opinion of Bhagavān and go back to the spiritual world. That is real mokṣa.

  10. Kāla-age/time in history,Deśa-Place/country,Patra-person/vessel. If you think a jyotiṣi is Brahman in this Kāla Deśa Patra look around with eyes of the Sampradāya. Western society sees a jyotiṣi as a mleccha-outcaste. I do understand that jyotiṣa is the highest of kalāḥ in the east but here it is not the same. The beauty of the sampradāya is that it sānātana so it adapts to the time, place, people.

  11. Bṛhad Parāśara Horā Śāstra does not exist in a vacuum, but in the context of the entire Vedic literature and culture. Brahminical values and initiations are the core of Vedic culture, and according to BPHS, without them one is not qualified to study jyotiṣa. The Vedānta-sūtra holds that not exactly mokṣa, but pure bhakti is the puruśārtha, or ultimate goal of human life. Therefore all Vedic arts aim at this goal and are incorporated by it. Qualified brāhmaṇas understand this.

  12. Where in Bṛhat Pārāśra Horā is more importance given to any one of the Puruṣārthāḥ-dharma,artha,kāma,mokṣa? You seem to be saying that jyotiṣa is only used for mokṣa When by means of exigesis, mokṣa is delt with least of all as the pravrajyāyogādhāyaḥ is short compared to the dhanayogā’dhyāyaḥ. Jyotiṣa is used for one and all. As is stated in BPH 1:5 lokānugrahakāriṇā | aid for all beings benefit if it said ātmajñāna for all then I would agree with you

  13. Thank you. Most people who want to learn astrology don’t bother to go to the original source materials. They accept derivative knowledge, thus they miss important fundamentals like the necessity for brahminical qualifications. That background is just as important as the details of interpretation and predictions, if not more so.

  14. Namaskar excellent lecture your very gentle way of teaching this knowledge is greatly appreciated

  15. Vedas came out of the breath of the Lord. They are the words of God. Vedas are an embodiment of divine knowledge. Lord imparted the divine knowledge to the Rishis. The Rishis were great realised persons who had direct intuitive perception of Brahman or the Truth. Vedas are the oldest books in the library . Vedas are eternal.

  16. You are very lucky. For those who don’t know, KN Rao is one of the lions of traditional Vedic astrology.

  17. Really good work.I studied under K N RAO and you are doing a very good job. Please keep it up.You are spreading the Vedas far and wide.may god help you.

  18. The Vedas are not very old; they are eternal, and they are the Absolute Truth. They have everything to do with science, they are the original and complete science. But they have nothing to do with nonsense materialistic science. Materialistic science deliberately puts on blinders by refusing to consider subjective phenomena like consciousness. Idiots; without consciousness, nothing else is important. You cannot understand that, so this is the conclusion of this thread.

  19. The Vedas are very old, and in many cases religious writings.
This looks to have little to nothing to do with science.

  20. No, we are not talking about false personality or physical or verbal behavior; we are talking about predicting changes in consciousness, which is separate from mind, intelligence and false ego. Material science investigates material things, but spiritual science describes spiritual things, beginning with consciousness, Brahman. If you have never read the Vedas you cannot have the slightest idea what we are talking about, because you lack the ontological categories that support the definitions.

  21. Most of these personality and predictive vehavior readings strongly rely on the Forer effect. I will look into your website and see if this is the case.
You are claiming this is science and not just for entertainment purposes correct?

  22. Yes, and none of them have any theory that offers accurate predictive behavior of consciousness. The best proof is that you do the experiment yourself and verify the result. Other proofs include the testimony of thousands of people who have done the experiements themselves. You can meet a whole community of such people on our website.

  23. A quick search on consciousness shows that the fields of “Evolutionary biology”, “Cognitive psychology”, “Cognitive neuroscience” all deal with consciousness and I do not think the professionals in those fields view it as “irrelevant”.

Do you have any proof that your methods work? If so what results do they produce?

  24. The so-called ‘scientific community’ is actually a religion. Based on their beliefs, they say that consciousness is irrelevant; but without consciousness, what is the meaning of science? What is the meaning of anything without consciousness? Consciousness is so important that it gives meaning to everything else. Yet the nonsense material scientists have no standard theory of consciousness that can predict its behavior. This science, empirical study of consciousness, is found only in the Vedas.
