Meditation affects the body in exactly the opposite ways that stress does, restoring the body to a calm state, helping the body to repair itself, and preventing new damage due to the physical effects of stress.

Meditation is a one of the natural methods of relieving stress. Though meditation and stress are inter related now, it actually started as a religious practice. Meditation is a simple way to balance a person’s physical, mental and emotional states. Meditation originated from Hinduism. It was also developed independently in Sufism. Meditation was later done for non religious purposes like exercises, martial arts and treatment of health conditions. In the present era, many religions especially eastern religions like Buddhism, Sikhism, and Judaism follow meditation. The recent attention on meditation is because it acts as a stress reliever.

Releasing tension: If the tension in your muscles persists when you are meditating, try tensing up each part of your body. Hold the tension for a few seconds, then let go, perhaps saying to yourself, “relax.” Pay attention to the feeling of release. By doing this, you are basically training your body to relax on command. Another technique is to let a little tension drain from your body with each exhalation. You’ll notice right away that it is easier to relax when breathing out, than when breathing in.

Most of the people who get on meditation do so because of its beneficial effects on stress. Stress refers to any or all the various pressures experienced in life. These can stem from work, family, illness, or environment and can contribute to such conditions as anxiety, hypertension, and heart disease. How an individual sees things and how he or she handles them makes a big difference in terms of how much stress he or she experiences.

Meditation helps to reduce stress by teaching us to switch off from the worries that can plague us through the day. Meditation is an opportunity to spend time by ourselves, without feeling at the beck and call of others. Spending 15 minutes in quietening the mind and focusing on the present moment, makes us more relaxed and effective decision makers.

People want to be careful about learning TM. The TM organization encourages people to go to special “residence courses” where they meditate for hours a day rather than just “twenty minutes twice a day” (20×2). People can get more and more involved until they are part of a full-blown psychologically dangerous cult that exists under the covers of the TM organization’s facade. These people can end up meditating for 8 hours a *day*. There are a serious psychological problems that develop with such people. They develop delusions such as that they are able to physically levitate. I was involved in the cult for 15 years, and I describe things here: There are also several formerly heavily involved people blogging here:

This is in *no* way a comment on other forms of meditation.
