I am looking for a good translation of the Tao Te Ching, online.?

I read some portions of Taoist philosophy, and I am interested in reading it more in depth.

I can find several translations online, but I do not just want any random translation.
Anybody know any good translations?

Thank you.

  1. Chinese is one of those languages that don’t translate well into English, especially since they have virtually no history together.

So I’d recommend buying, yes, buying a translation made in the last century (especially the last few decades) online at amazon.com. There are reviews of different translations there and you can even compare the texts if you want.

Some translations put the Tao Te Ching into heavy paraphrase, so it may sound clearer, but are not exactly the most accurate. Others have alot of scholarly annotation that may drag down the pace of reading if you just want a quick read. So it really depends on how much time and effort you want to spend reading it, and how important translational accuracy is to you.

And the book itself is so vague that different translations render the same words so differently that the meanings change.
