  1. I think coconut oil is a food that might have health benefits or bad effects on health like lots of foods.
I don’t think every food that has an effect on health is considered a medicine (since all foods do affect our health.)

Maybe if it was taken in a non-food form like a pill it could be considered herbal medicine. I don’t know.

  2. Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food. Definitely Yes. I’ve done a huge amount of reading and research on coconut oil. It’s the only oil I cook with and the only product besides soap that I use on my skin…it’s amazing. Some of the health benefits I’m familiar with are weight loss, supports proper thyroid function, helps regulate insulin levels, heart healthy, supports liver function and an immune booster. It’s antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflamatory antiviral and anti-parasitic. People look at a jar of coconut oil and freak out that’s it’s a solid oil…a saturated fat. The truth is that coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid, the critical substance in mother’s breast milk that helps protect the newborn. The reason it’s so liver healthy is that it’s actually diverted from the digestive tract and taken directly to the liver where’s it’s processed. As a result coconut oil is never stored as fat, but burned as fuel immediately. All of the tropical oils (coconut, palm, palm kernel) were demonized in the early 60’s by the soybean manufacturers. Prior to that the only oil you found in processed food were tropical oils. The soybean manufacturers for all intents and purposes put many of the small coconut farmers out of business with their negative add campaigns. Food manufacturers gave in to consumer pressure and replaced the tropical oils with soy oil, believing they were making a healthier choice. Wrong!!! The soybean association has deep pockets and their only motivation was making more money…as usual. Not only that, but soy products are less than zero on the health scale. It’s only been in the last few years that the overwhelming evidence has come out with the truth about coconut oil. I’ve read about clinics in the Phillipine’s that are treating AIDS patients with coconut oil and I’ve also read they are doing studies with cancer and alzheimer’s patients as well. Bruce Fife, a certified nutritionist and naturopath, has spent years researching coconut oil. He’s written several book about coconut oil that are documented amazingly well. I’d recommend The Coconut Oil Miracle for a first read. He also has a great newsletter that you can subscribe to. His website is http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org. Thanks for the opportunity to spread the word. Good luck and be well.
