Pagans Only – how do you cleanse your runes and how often?

I’m a practising witch and do rune readings occasionally. Since I created my runes years ago I’ve continuously used them, but recently I found out one usually cleanses their tools? How is this done? Does it mean if you haven’t done it readings become less than accurate?

  1. First, it depends on what your runes are made from. Crystals tend to absorb lots of energies more quickly than other materials, so runes made from crystals should be cleansed frequently, whereas you could go less frequenly with wood or clay runes.

There are many many ways to cleanse tools of any unwanted or negative energies. They can be laid in the light of the full moon, they can be held under running water from a natural source such as a stream or the ocean (hold them in a net bag so they don’t get washed away!), they can be “smudged” by smoke such as sage, sweet grass or cedar, they can be laid upon the earth or in the sun for such time as you deem suitable. (Of course, you want to pick a method that won’t harm your tools.)

I smudge mine whenever I feel the need.

Some folks cleanse with intent and visualization. (You were probably to a point cleansing your runes for readings all this time without even realizing it, because your intent was to get an accurate reading.)
