Do the Chinese today read and revere Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching?

I think the wisdom in the book is a great gift to humanity. I have relied on it for years. Some Chinese friends of mine have made disparaging remarks about it and so I wonder, do the Chinese today still follow the philosophy (not the religion) of Taoism?

  1. Probably not as much as they used to, especially the young. The Chinese are adopting the West’s sense of capitalistic materialism…”getting stuff” is becoming more important than learning to live. Sad.

  2. Of course. In some Universities, the Tao Te Ching is the compulsory course, even in some university, the PhD must read the Tao Te Ching.
