1 thought on “What do people who are Buddhist think about Thich Nhat Hanh and his teachings especially on Mindfulness?

  1. Thich Nhat Hanh is a highly regarded Buddhist teacher, both in Vietnam and in the West. He has many followers in Vietnam and his has thousands of students in Western countries. Most larger cities have local practice groups in his tradition.

Thich Nhat Hanh teaches Vietnamese Zen. But, while his teaching is clearly in the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism, it has little connection to traditional Zen as it was developed in China and is taught today in Korea and Japan. Rather, his teaching technique is more related to the Vipassana tradition of Theravadin Buddhism.

Thich Nhat Hanh employs walking meditation, which is a common technique in Zen used between periods of sitting meditation. However, his instructions on walking meditation are quite different from traditional Zen teachings on this technique.
