  1. Giorgio Vasari, from whom this information comes, doesn’t give an exact year. He simply says that the child Botticelli wasn’t particularly interested in his academic studies and that his father, “exasperated by his son’s restless mind … apprenticed him as a goldsmith….”

    Since he seems to have moved over to the workshop of Filippo Lippi by 1462, when he would have been 16 or 17, he could have been apprenticed to the goldsmith at any age between, say, 10 and 14 — possibly at a somewhat later age than usual, since his father seems to have been anxious to give him that academic education before finally giving up and arranging the apprenticeship. He was born around 1445.
