your question is sort of vague.. but you ought to start with whats “real” and not gimmicky. So my opinion would be read a book that is sort of a 101 on buddhism. its certainly not the same as being a hippie, but will give you the foundation to go about self-awaredness in a smart fashion.

as far as true hippie? read up on Timothy Leary or alexander Shulgin. They found some pretty good methods lol.

the herbal side of things can be found out by researching the differences between “western medicine” and eastern medical approaches.

thats a pretty sloppy answer Im sorry, but Im tired. Email me for more info if you want.

  1. Read, read, read!!!

I don’t know what you are interested in, but read about it! Don’t accept one book to be law, check it out in other sources too.

  2. There are a few things you should read, to open your eyes to the whole natural life style, hip life style thing, in no order of importance:

    1) A good book on Zen is: “Embrace Tiger Return to Mountain”, about tai chi.
    2) Feng Shui is important. You should read a good introduction such as Lilian Too’s “Total Feng Shui”.
    3) Living a simple, frugal life style is a big help for self awareness. You should have “The Complete Tightwad Gazette” by Amy Dacyzyn.
    4) We all need money, but we needn’t be controlled by it. A great book to read on that is “Your Money or Your Life” by Joe Rodriguez.
    5) A good reference to simple things may also be found in the “Last Whole Earth Catalog”.
    6) You should try to connect to authentic music of various peoples, especially someone like Dougie McClean if you like Celtic, who have a special appreciation for their part of the Earth.

Learn to garden, and to fix your own stuff. Learn to hike and spend time outdoors. Learn to meditate. If you study yoga, you should know pranayama, raja, and hatha.

Finally, learn to connect in some way with the creator of all this beauty that one may find in this life. You should choose a path that is related to your familiy’s history. By living a quiet, controlled life in this way, and by being always in balance, we can get to the kind of awareness you are seeking. It is a life long journey.
